Frequently Asked Questions
Will Crime Stoppers know who I am?
No. Durham Regional Crime Stoppers does not use call display and does not track identifiers of mobile or internet tipsters. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that tipsters remain anonymous — only a judicial authorization could order a tipster be identified, and that has very restricted use in Canadian law.
When can my anonymity be challenged?
Anonymity may be open to challenge if a tip is made to further criminal activity or interfere with the administration of justice, to frame an innocent person, if disclosure is necessary to establish someone’s innocence, or if a tipster — having received full legal advice — chooses to waive it for their own reasons.
How do I get paid for a tip?
When you submit a tip, you’ll be given a confidential tracking code. Since we don’t know who you are or your phone number, you have to initiate contact with us using that code to check on your tip’s status. Board-approved rewards are paid once a tip leads to an arrest.
Can I submit a tip if I’m the victim?
No — Crime Stoppers does not take tips from victims. If you are a victim of a crime, report directly to Durham Regional Police Service at 1-888-579-1520, or call 911 in an emergency.
